Henry of Navarre, also known as King Henry IV of France, was a monarch who ruled from 1589 to 1610. He is best known for ending the French Wars of Religion and issuing the Edict of Nantes, which granted religious freedom to Protestants.
French Wars of Religion: A series of conflicts in France between Catholics and Protestants from 1562 to 1598.
Edict of Nantes: A law issued by King Henry IV in 1598 that granted substantial rights to the Protestant minority in Catholic-majority France.
Huguenots: French Protestants who followed the teachings of John Calvin during the Protestant Reformation; they were granted rights under the Edict of Nantes.
