This refers to the period from 1858-1947 when Britain ruled over India as part of its empire.

British East India Company: A private company granted a royal charter by Queen Elizabeth I which eventually gained political control over large parts of India. It's akin to a powerful corporation today gaining so much influence that they start running parts of government.

Sepoy Mutiny/Rebellion (1857): This was a major uprising in India against the rule of the British East India Company. It's like if all your classmates decided to protest against an unfair school policy.

Raj: The period of direct British rule over the Indian subcontinent, following the rebellion. It's as if after your class protest, instead of changing policies, school authorities decide to tighten their control.
