Maritime boundary disputes occur when there are disagreements over who has rights to ocean space and resources.
Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ): A sea zone prescribed by the United Nations over which a state has special rights regarding exploration and use of marine resources.
Continental Shelf: The extended perimeter of each continent, which is covered during high tide and revealed at low tide. Disputes often arise over who controls these areas.
International Waters: Areas of the sea that are not under the jurisdiction of any country. They are open to all states, whether coastal or landlocked.
