Scale Degrees

Definition

Scale degrees refer to each individual note within a musical scale. They are numbered from one through seven using Roman numerals (I-VII).

Related terms

Tonic: The first scale degree, also known as the "home" note or key center.

Subdominant: The fourth scale degree, often associated with a sense of stability and preparation.

Dominant: The fifth scale degree, which creates tension and leads back to the tonic.
