John Cabot was an Italian navigator and explorer who is credited with discovering parts of North America under the commission of Henry VII of England. His 1497 voyage to the coast of Newfoundland laid the groundwork for future British claims to Canada.
Henry VII: The King of England from 1485-1509, he sponsored John Cabot's voyages which led to English claims over parts of North America.
Newfoundland: An island off the east coast of North America, and one of Canada's provinces. It was discovered by John Cabot during his 1497 expedition.
British Empire: A system comprised mainly of territories colonized or otherwise acquired by Britain from the late 16th century until mid-20th century. It became one of history's largest empires.
